I hate this state with a passion.

On TDY enroute right now in Va. Coming from GA.

Ga reg expired today. I go to register my vehicles in Va, and they want me to pay sales tax on them. :ugh::ugh:

Virginia has a BS law on the books that is aimed at service members.

In Georgia you do not pay sales tax on vehicles if you bought from private seller. Virginia knows this, and if you have to register your cars in Va they make you pay that tax.

What kinda BS is this? Now I'm not sure what to do.

oh and also, most states are like this, so next time you buy from a private seller you can try to make a deal with them to "lie" about how much they sold it to you for

Send them a copy of your LES and you don't have to pay it. And VA, especially VA Beach, is very unfriendly to military.

It's been getting better recently though.

B/c the verbage is directly aimed at military.

Let's see, Georgia is one of the largest military states in the US. Georgia does not do sales tax on private sales. Virginia is another large military state. What people are coming in and out of virginia? Military.

Then use their address as your place of residence, for licensing and registration purposes...it may take you a trip down there but it sounds like it would be worth it

this wasn't aimed at the military, there is even a clause that exempts you having to pa unless you got the car recently. They just don't want you to buy out of state to avoid paying the tax.

There is a lot more people coming into Virginia than those in the military.

The only way one can buy out of state, and register it out of state is if you are military.

Only illegal aliens outpace military for coming into va. :mamoru:

So civilians can't cruise over to Maryland and buy a vehicle there?

They can't register it in Maryland. They'd take the bill of sale back to Virginia and pay the sales tax when they register and title, or at the dealer if they buy from them.

About to head to VA for the first time with the military, and I'm not really sure how everything with your car works. If my car is registered in Texas, do I have to have an up to date admissions test sticker from Texas? Or can I get it from any state?

You don't have to get the sticker at all. Typically these sort of things are waved for military. And Virginia or any other state police (minus tx) can not give you a citation for not having it. Are you a TX resident? And is your tags up to date and still good for a while?

I am a TX resident, and both tags are recently expired.

You are good then since your a resident. TX should work with you on re-registering while in Va. But you don't have to get the inspection sticker or the emissions sticker while you are outside of TX. Just may get hassled if you ever go home on leave. Basically, other states can not enforce laws that are not their own. So Va police, can't cite you for not obeying TX law.
