Am I the only one who thinks the idea of recording video on your DSLR is one of the worst ideas ever?

To me, all it means is they're going to focus time and effort on turning a great camera into a video camera... meaning they won't be spending time on improving the photo aspect of it.

It also means the camera will be more expensive and have worthless ass features i'm never going to use.

To me, everyone who thinks this is a great idea is a fucking moron who is used to using a point and shoot and has no idea what a DSLR is actually for.

    What do you all think?

To give you an idea of how amazing people think this will be:

I don't see anything wrong with it. With live view already implemented, it's just a matter of capturing the stream.

I mean I don't think it's an actual reason to buy the camera and doesn't factor into whether I'll purchase one or not, but having it available will be nice. I'd prefer them to have a dedicated fv lock button than video recording.

Or honestly I'd definitely take metering with ai lenses over video.

But compared to the d80 and the feature set nikon has decided to include with the d90, just having the d300 CMOS sensor is worth the upgrade. I hear it's limited to 12-bit mode though.

If you look at the picture you see he can take 513 photos or 4 minutes 41 seconds of video.

Unnecessary feature that will get all the soccer moms and little league dads investing in a camera that's too much for them to handle.

So that means if it's like the d300 he's on Jpeg fine for shooting pics and has a 2 gig sd card in.

Oh that means it's recording video at about 7 megabytes a second... or more specifically around 50+ megabits a second. That's high def video rate.

Crap now I'm excited about it. High def video through an interchangable lens system with shallow depth of field.

I retract my previous answer this is sweet.

It'll suck if you don't have the camera mounted to a tripod or have a vr lens though... And I bet it'll eat a battery faster than you can think.

FYI the expeed processor already supports video. I'm not sure adding this as a feature is making the thing more expensive. That shits all arbitrary anyway. Take for instance the 1.5 fps of the Canon 1000d when in RAW mode. There's no reason for that at all they just artificially limit it to differentiate between it and the 450d. Nikon pulls the same shit, but the d90 looks like it has a dedicated bracket button unlike the d90 hopefully it's programmable. I wonder if it has a dedicate AF-ON button?

I think you're an idiot that is talking out of his ass. :dunno:

    1. It's a fucking RUMOR so you don't have the slightest clue how the feature will work or how much the camera will cost.

    2. You're speculating on cost without thinking through what video on a DSLR means. All it means is leaving the mechanical shutter open and then getting video right off the CMOS using and "electronic" shutter. Its the same thing as Live view, and that sure as hell doesn't add cost now does it?

    3. Video on a DSLR will be both higher res and more versatile thanks to the sensors and lenses available, meaning a new way to get some creative HD video. This is a GOOD thing, not a bad thing.

    4. As for turning a great camera bad because they are adding a video feature, well that's just speculative opinion. It's not like adding video will suddenly cause the camera market to implode in a fit of consumer anger fueled angst. Get over it. If you don't like it, don't use it. How hard is that?

    :crying:

Agreed. That's the only reason I miss my old Sony.. The point and shoot I have now is a crappy Olympus and doesn't do even decent video. We do have a video camera now, but there are times when I think it would be nice :dunno:

I'd rather have a better DSLR, like I want my phone to just make calls.

Soon your camera will make calls too.

Or do I mean that your phone will accept multiple lenses...

    Hmmm.
