When I get a video file with a missing codec, Windows Media Player plays it back not telling me anything. The video simply plays blank and sound comes out as normal.

How would I know what codec I need and how do I get Windows MP to download it?

    Download a program called Gspot
    http://www.headbands.com/gspot/download.html
It will tell you the missing codec(s) that you will need.

right clicking the file and going to the properties tag SOMETIMES shows what it was encoded as
