figured i might get a bit more educated answer here than in the main forum. i just put in my new xfx 6600gt card, after uninstalling all the old software, and installing all the new and up-to-date drivers for the new one. Now, when i try to run a 3d game, it gets about 5 seconds into the actual game and just craps out, and also when I try to play movies, it slows down the whole computer and sucks up all the cpu speed (which could be an entirely differant problem). Now, I think the problem may possibly be that i only have a 250 watt power source, and i've heard it's best to have at least 400 watts, and my system is already drawing most of the 250 watts. So, could that be causing the video card to crap out since it's not getting enough power?

EDIT: My computer is an Emachine t2865. yes i know it's a piece of shit and emachine sucks, but it was a gift, so i can live with it with a few upgrades

Yeah definitely upgrade the power supply. A good quality 250w might be able to handle it, but a 250w eMachine power supply: no way.

Before you go buying a power supply, open your case and have a close look at the motherboard power connections. Make sure it's standard ATX or ATX12V (with the extra square 4-pin connector).

If there is a proprietary power connection going to the board then a regular ATX power supply like you'd get from Newegg may not work.

hmm...i don't think 250w will cover you for a gaming rig.

i say 350w for any gaming computer is a minimum really.

If you can afford a $75 PSU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817182010

its very stable and supplies rock solid rails. i know, cuz im running on one:) i got it when it was only $50 too, i was sure it wouldn't be this good, but it is.

If that's all he could afford go for it, it's a good PSU.

But personally i wouldn't trade my Rosewill for that sparkle any day, even if u made up the difference in hard cash. It's a rock solid PSU...but you wouldn't know it unless you owned one. Rosewill PSU's aren't too popular, because some suck and some are great. THAT one is a great one :)

ok, well, i got it all plugged in, with a small amount of clearance problems (stupid tiny emachine case), but the card is running beautifully, and half life 2 never looked so good. But now i've run into a new problem. it seems that for some reason i can't play movies. I don't know if it's a video card problem or something that got screwed up with the new drivers or something completely differant. so any ideas on this new problem?

What are you playing movies with? Try reinstalling/updating it.

Do you know what chipset is on that motherboard? You might need to update the drivers for it. Make sure DirectX is up to date while you're at it.

Go look for a program called Aida32 or Everest Home Edition. They're pretty much the same program and will give you all kinds of information about your system along with links to driver updates.
