I'm buying a computer soon, and was looking for opinions on video cards. What would I be looking to spend on a card that can play new games fairly well, and won't go obsolete in a year?

GeForce 7 series FTW. $200+ for the 'lower end' models that will still kick the hell out of the 6 series.

If you're still running AGP your best bet dollar wise is probably the 7800GS. It's a bit pricy though $250-300.

Ugh, the 7800GS really pissed me off there, and it made me angry with nVidia.

You don't gain a world of performance with that shit. AGP is on it's way out - if you have an Athlon 64 or LGA775 P4/Celeron, get a new motherboard and video card.

A decent motherboard will run you around $70.

Sadly my poor ass is stuck with an Athlon XP.

And if you don't want to ditch your board, get an X800XL or a 6800GS/GT if you still run AGP. The 7800GS is not worth the extra money.

i have a geforce 6800gt, priced on newegg is about 260 or so, i really like it. Ran FEAR on nearly full settings (only 2x AA, but the other options were full) beautifully. Although i have the pci express version, not the agp.

I picked up a 7600GT a few days ago for just under $200 on newegg and it's been running great for me.
