Been benching like that since I can remember, recently switched back a bit (elbows a bit more flared, not so much arch) and I've seen better progress.

also they dont really do the whole "press up in a straight line" thing anymore, they tend to push it back over the face as it moves towards lockout.

i donno anymore. if you watch most big raw benchers (key being raw), most don't press with elbows in and a low touch. most are elbows out. this is even more apparent in the big benchers in other countries where they almost all bench with elbows out touching mid chest-ish.

the 2 guys i can think of that do bench with an elbows in and touching low are kennelly and mendelson. but both of those have insanely strong triceps due to tons of heavy tricep work for shirted benches.

i do believe that benching like this does reduce injury potential though.

so it'll only add numbers to your bench if you have strong triceps?

Um, yes. It's standard powerlifting form - arching the back and retracting the scapula (shoulder blades) both significantly reduces the ROM during a bench press. It's ideal.

All our club benches elbows out, the sternum rule pretty much negates elbows in benching.

The japs have some of the craziest benchers and they all bench elbows out.

Thats part of a GREAT video. I have the entire thing here on my laptop - watch it all the time. Right or wrong, I try to mimic this form every time I bench. The biggest bench I've ever had (pretty weak compared to alot on this board so I won't throw numbers around) came from when I was using this form. It also came when I was training at the best gym/group I've ever trained with, so I can't say it was solely the issue, but it did help.

Generally speaking - I'd trust what comes out of Dave Tate's mouth. No need to ask us first. Outside of BDR, not many people have even remotely as much experience as him... in the world, let alone this board.
