my school is selling off their old g4s after upgrading to g5s, $400 a piece if i can get one. i don't know too many specifics other than they all have at least 1 gb of ram.

i'm new to macs but is there anything i should know? what are possible processor speeds? i'm getting this just to run music software, reason, logic etc.
    thoughts on price?

    thanks

We have dual 450mhz at work and they still run suprisingly fast..

can we get a description of how it looks like? Atleast the color of the thing?

if you get a dual g4, they'll run just fine. single g4's can still hack it, but I wouldn't call them "fast".

i think they look pretty similar to the g5s they have, i don't suppose they only came in one color. i think they were kind of grey silvery ish. since they're used for audio and video editing i would imagine they're on the higher end.

sorry, i know almost nothing about macs

If they have a mirror, polished front then yea it's worth it.

Chances are you can grab it for $400 and it doesn't turn out to do what you want you can ebay it and make the money back.

If it's the silver ones, then hell yeah.

I grabbed a free G4 from school :o Had a dual 500, then slapped some dual 1.2g and now it flies :eek3:

G4 PowerMacs range from 350mhz - 1.42GHz. Not only is that a huge range of speeds, but also prices. The low end 350-500mhz is only worth about $300. However, once you start getting into the Quicksilver model Powermacs, then their value goes up significantly, as does the speeds.

If you want some more info as well as pictures, take a look at http://www.apple-history.com for a complete lineup

you can get the processors replaced in them for somewhere around $300-500 I believe. My laptop would have ran me somewhere in the area of $300-400

one more question for you guys and then i'll leave you alone. knowing the little bit that you know about this computer. ie. 733mhz processor and probably upgraded ram, would this sufficiently run Reason or Logic?
