Got 2 vB sites.. both on 3.8

One gets NO spam signups, or spammers, ever. Been up for 5 years. The 2nd one is new, and is getting bombed daily by fake accounts.

5-6 fake signups a day.. most do nothing, have no links in sigs, they're just a username + email signup that then sits dormant (obvious fake accounts though, random email addresses and username is always FirstnameLastname type format).

I've got recaptcha on signup, doesn't do shit.

1-2 a week will try posting, but Akismet catches those posts.

Wtf do you do about this shit? Annoying as hell.

also random question on signup page might help.

i've seen a lot more forums doing that now.

"Whats another name for a K9. Hint 3 letters" = dog

    etc

make it so that you can't post links or images until 10 posts or so.. i've got all the sign-up things installed as well but.. their software can beat everything on the market pretty much ;)

the minimum posts thing is the only thing that's worked 100% for me

I'm on a VB site and the spam and bots are horrible. They don't even post links, they put shit in their sig and post stuff that if you Google search is all over the place. LOL

Yeah, our sites get some of that as well. I've been checking new sign ups on all of our sites to look for that shit and immediately ban and/or delete the account. :o

Nope, diff IPs, they don't seem connected in any way.

I've always had a problem with sites making members jump through hoops. Having recaptcha or something is ok.. but when they have recaptcha, email verification, 2 random questions, and then limit your activity.. it scares people off. But.... i'm thinking I might need to compromise. :hsd:

These ones don't even really post much, it's more the fact that I get all these bullshit signups that just sit there.. I want to stop them signing up in the first place.

Heard about this, wasn't sure if it was worth it.. i'll give it a shot :)

It's easy to ban .ru address if I remember correctly, it's in the adminCP IIRC.

I would go with the custom question to.

    Doesn't this block AOL?

I was under the impression that doing do would block multiple legit AOL users.
