My fiance and I have been taking Ballroom Dance lessons for a couple years and our studio just got a REALLY nice new place built and this was the first big dance they had there. I went to grab some pictures for them. Typical stuff since Im not baller enough to have remotes :wtc:

love how you dragged the shutter, but i'm not quite seeing a lot of emotion in these pics. I think getting closer to the action would help?

looks like someone tried flash blur

stop down some more, go with longer exposures

flash exposure looks a bit hot in these

    find something more visually interesting

#4 would have worked much better with more motion to the sides

if you are using an external hotshoe flash, don't forget that you can also zoom in the flash head to reduce the output coverage spread.

it will take some practice, but when you combine this with shutter dragging / flashblur, you'll be able to create a greater sense of motion while preserving a visually recognizable image of the subject

keep in mind that you don't want to go too hot on the flash exposure and usually want to dial things down. the flash is just meant to clean up and highlight the subject with fill

Cool. Im just using the 580EX II but I really dont know anything about flash photography aside from the bare basics. Im still a major noob when it comes to pretty much all photography. Thanks for the information though. Ill try to work with the spread more next time I try this.
