Do you bring your SLR with you and all your lenses or just a P+S? i kinda want to bring an SLR for maximum pic opportunities but i want to enjoy the sights and scenes too and not feel like my vacation is an excuse to make a photo album... i was thinking a G10 would be a good compromise. lightweight and simple yet i can still have some SLR-quality pics

Seeing as I have no experience with the G10 (I hear great things). I'd take an ungripped body, a medium range (24-70, that range) lens and a flash.

24-105 IS lens is my "taking only one lens on vacation" lens... I'd recommend it on a 5D/50D type camera without a grip, I take it on the 1-brick and it's still a bit much, plus i have to take a flash too since there's no built in.

I voted P&S. If you're going for a vacation take that, but if you have the time/room, then take a real camera.

I vote P&S for the convenience. you can do more things when you're not lugging 5lbs of equipment around :dunno: that's always been my grip going on extended trips

P&S in pocket at all times and a DSLR kit in a bag... You get an extra one for photo gear at the airport, you minus whale use it.

Why, mainly, do you go on vacation? To take pics? Or to do all the other things one does

I like P&S for vac pics. Just got a G10, and its awesome.

No need for DLSR when I go on vac.

see and I would ask the question:

Why, mainly, do you take pics?

cause I take pics of my family mainly and so I would take my dslr with me. although I questions this also and ended up bringing my ungripped 40D and used a 17-40 lens the whole time and packed a flash in a bag we took along each day and that was it except batts and cards. it went well

I'd say both. Currently I don't own a P&S, however next tropical trip I take I'll either get a submersible P&S or a inexpensive underwater enclosure for an SLR.

I tend to go on vacation in places I want to photograph, so I don't think I'd be happy with just a P&S. That being said, when I am on vacation, I don't take my dslr everywhere...sometimes I just wanna relax and not worry about having a ton of gear to carry around so it stays behind in the hotel.

I went to West Africa last year and I didn't hesitate to bring my SLR cam instead of my P&S cam.

Dude you could have stopped in Nigeria while you were there. Apparently there is a very rich person who died adn tehy are in very desperate need of my help and are willign to give me large summs of money. You could have just collected it and saved them the western union fee.

    damnit

I bring both but it depends on the situation. Im in florida on vacation right now and have both just incase but i've mainly used my DSLR. I have 3 lenses with me in my tiny Lowepro Rezo 180: Tokina 12-24, Tamron 17-50 & Nikon 70-300
