I bought a wrecked 98 Explorer a couple weeks ago to use as a drivetrain donor for my 95 Ranger. I've been working on it a bit each night after work and the engine is just about ready to come out of the Explorer.

This is as far as I've gotten so far:

Auto trans? Regardless, should have a decent power-to-weight ratio. Should be a fun ride, keep us posted.

Myself, I'd like to take a base shortbed Ranger and swap in an SVO turbo 2.3 with a few 'tweaks'. Make very few appearance changes, like decent rubber and suspension upgrades to make it stick to the ground.

Yea I'm sticking with the 4R70W that normally comes behind the 5.0. I gave a couple thoughts to a manual but finding one that will bolt on and hold up to the V8 wasn't going to be cheap.

A turbo 2.3 would be fun, I just have to deal with nazi smog regulations here.

This part of Ohio doesn't smog...yet. I doubt my S/C'd Tempo would pass right now, so if that changes, it's 'back to the drawing board'.

Still sounds like a blast even with the auto. Are there shift kits, etc for it? Could still be a beast.

    Good luck. :bigthumb:

Its the same trans that the Mustang runs so there are a multitude of parts for it.

you keeping the AWD or what? If your going with 2wd (not sure if your truck is 2wd or 4wd) your going to have to do something about the tail of the trans as I believe they only came in AWD. Also with the engine out you might want to check on getting a set of headers for it along with P&Ping the intake. The headers on the explorer engine are horrible if I remember correct.

My truck is 2WD. Keeping AWD would be nice, but it would mean too much fab work for what I want to put into this project. There was a 2WD 5.0 Explorer so I just need to find a 2WD trans (there is one on ebay now) or tear down the current trans and replace the tail case and output shaft.

A set of headers are already on the bill. I think horrible is an understated way to describe the stock manifolds.

I tossed a copy of media wiki on my web host to keep track of it. I won't bore OT with thatshitbyme though, just the pics as I go along.

Hoping to get the motor+trans out this weekend plus fix my baja bug. Once I get the brake cylinders replaced in the bug I can start thinking about taking the ranger apart.

No new pics lately but the compression on #5 was way low so I tore it down. Once I got it apart I changed my mind from just re-ringing the pistons and decided I'm going to build a 347 stroker.

isn't it nice to be able to do that? Oh you know what low compression lets strip it down and turn it into a stroker. Sounds good. Get pictures damn it!!!

    Excellent choice my man.

Keep this thread updated please with lots of pics! I can never look through enough v8 ranger swaps as I want to do a 5.0/347 stroker swap into my 2000 Mazda in the next 5 years or 60,000 miles. :wiggle:

I haven't bought anything for it yet. I need a few more weeks to save up the money.

I can take pics of the bare block if you like. :)
