having firearms secured in his vehicle. He was also expelled from the university.

College paper has bad ending - Roanoke.com

Being committed for three days involuntarily for completing your writing assignment? what the fuck. I guess you just can't write about certain topics anymore because they will hurt peoples feelings? :ugh:

about the law: VA doesn't allow preemption. But publicly funded University's for some gay reason have been allowed to "ban" firearms on campus. While the ban doesn't make you having one illegal, you can be expelled.

More of an assault on common sense.

I'd have to read the paper to determine how I feel about it but assuming its nothing excessive I feel bad for the guy because he likely can't afford any decent lawyer to help him out.

I have to say, that having the guns in the car was not the brightest idea, as much as I dont agree with the rules, he shouldnt have had the guns there.

However, having him involuntarily committed for writing the paper is really scary. It means that anyone in authority can basically have you admitted whenever they are scared of something you say or write. And being involuntarily admitted really fucks you up in the future for anything that requires any kind of background check, even if its something like a teaching position for a job or volunteer work.

    That just doesnt seem right.

I can't believe he got involuntarily committed for writing a paper. That usually only happens under a court order to determine mental capacity. The other thing was that this guy had his CCW, was an Iraqi war vet, and had a 3.9 GPA. he obviously wasn't some fuckup. Just a guy doing what he was told in a CREATIVE writing class. Yeah he had some poor choices in using the professor's name in the story, and that the subject did deal with VATech, and suicide and killing the teacher, but that doesn't mean that it was a threat. Who here hasn't wanted to hurt their teacher out of stupidity....

he posted the full details on another board, I'll paste them here later when I am not browsing on the phone...

His major fault was telling them he had the fireams in the car and consenting to search his car  :ugh:

So let me get this straight.... He was given a creative writing assignment... He completes it by doing something truely CREATIVE (not that normal crap people do) and then he gets fucking expelled, ccw license revoked, ability to purchase firearms taken away, and his life ruined????

    What the FUCK?

Here is the kids entire story, posted on open carry:

Now, his big fuckup was telling them he had guns in the car and allowing them to search.

but interestingly enough as those more versed in the law over there pointed out, the VA AG expressed opinion on this matter already, securing firearms in the trunk while at college:

I'd like to see what the grounds were for being committed, after all that will be an issue for his gun rights down the road. I understand a court ordered mental health evaluation, but that is different from being committed and should be the basis of being committed.

wow. I don't even know what to say here. Does this mean the horror genre is completely dead? Or is just writing about schools or school figures now outlawed?

It'd have to be a pretty demented piece of writing for me to think he deserved any of this.
