I'm a Torrent n00b, just started fucking around with them today.

I have made the necessary adjustments on my router (port range forwarding and my firewall) been fucking with the settings for the past 20 minutes and my dl speeds are still terrible (10-50k/s)...

Have I missed something? All the reading I've done says I'm doing it correctly...wtf?

"Topics concerning anything illegal (ie. hacking, cracking, piracy ) or "do my homework" will not be tolerated. Keep it clean kids."

torrents are tiptoeing that very very fine line.

A side question about torrents, if I use it to d/l something I have a hard copy of, say Godsmack's first CD, that's all scratched to hell, I'm legit right?

Torrents are perfectly legal. There is nothing wrong with this thread unless someone discusses illegally obtaining copyrighted material.

Fair use allows you to make a backup if no copy protection exists on the disc. However, the DMCA does not allow you to make a backup if the CD has any form of copy protection.

Are you getting a yellow warning triangle or a green check mark on the bottom bar?

according to most record labels, the agreement you make when purchasing the cd would prohibit that.

I don't know you should be good. Not all torrents download at 200k+. Depends on who's seeding, how many seeds, and net traffic.

    Well that's just retarded.

given the situation, it makes sense. To keep loopholes to a minimum, and reduce overall complexity, create a law that is fair in the vast majority of situations. Although it may not benefit the legitimite user attempting to obtain a copy to replace a scratched cd, it does cover the other 95% of the time when people are simply stealing. Moral of the story? Take better care of your CDs. OR subscribe to an electronic music service (I use iTunes) where you can get a digital copy of the song with licensing that better serves your uses. (I am able to make many copies of my iTunes purchases, legally, for archival purposes, and can have up to 5 devices authorized to play them -- which I think is more than sufficient.

Perhaps a better solution would be to emplore a record label to allow you to exchange the damaged cd for a replacement given shipping and possibly a modest handling fee were paid.

hey jollyogre, i'm not calling you out nor do i mean to derail the thread, but for someone with such sensitive ears and an ass load of studio production quality equipment, wouldn't itunes' music quality be inadequate? i hear alotta complaints about their songs only being 128k vs. a lossless format.

the new iTunes "Plus" songs are quite good.

But I generally purchase cds and rip them in apple-lossless. Sounds perfect.

There are too many possible variables with regards torrents to know whether your speeds are shitty or whether they are perfectly fine. However I will say that you don't need to forward a range of ports, one specified port is fine with all the useful clients.

However, may I suggest you use Azureus 2.x rather than the latest utorrent, as utorrent has been banned from a few sites.

i believe oink has banned old versions of utorrent, not the newest (1.7.1, 1.72). though i could be wrong, i've never had a problem using utorrent.

Quote from a site I use "Please read the FAQ on approved clients. Don't become another banned statistic! Yes, Utorrent 1.7/1.7.1/1.7.2 onwards is banned."

Did azureus finally fix the huge memory leak they had. I used to use Azureus but after it was running for awhile my whole computer would crap out.

    What OS?

My Azureus leaked memory like crazy but I think the problem was more than likely with the GNU Java VM, since it is buggy, that Ubuntu uses by default.

Now I use and have come to prefer KTorrent.
