Utah lawmakers pass gun regulation exemption bill
    February 10th, 2010 @ 2:10pm

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Guns made and kept in Utah would be exempt from federal regulations under a measure passed by the Utah Legislature.

Senate Bill 11 was passed Wednesday by the Utah House 56-17. It now goes to the governor.

The proposal mirrors one Montana signed into law last year that's intended to trigger a federal court battle.

The measures would allow guns made in the respective states to be exempt from federal gun registration rules like background checks.

The goal is to circumvent federal authority over interstate commerce, the legal basis for most gun regulation in the U.S.

Sen. Margaret Dayton, an Orem Republican, has said her bill is part of a broader effort to send a message to Congress that the federal government is overstepping its bounds.

The Robinson XCR is made in Utah and you can definitely get one of those full auto.

I used to live there, if this goes into effect, I may return and get that XCR I've been wanting for awhile. :big grin:

I still don't think full auto will be allowed. This is just for registration, right?

If it's like the Montana law, it would allow for SBS, SBR, and suppressors without federal registration/tax. Full auto was specifically excluded.

not that the ATF is worried about the loss of the $200 tax stamp but i doubt they will take kindly to the states taking away their federal sovereignty

A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

    Seems pretty straightforward to me.

If anything, this would be a good way for states to tell the fed to go fuck itself. It has way too much power as it is.

Unless you're a felon, even a non violent felon. Cause more than $2500 in damage? No right to defend yourself ever again.

So do you think violent felons shouldn't be allowed to own a gun? what about dishonorable discharges from the military? What about the mentally retarded?

I think everybody should be allowed to. And I should be allowed to shoot 'em as soon as they do something dangerous towards me.

But I dont see any reason a non-violent offender shouldnt be allowed to own a gun again.

The only real purpose they serve is a kind of liability insurance. Background checks have never prevented a crime, all they do is make it so when somebody uses a gun in a crime, the gun dealers/manufacturers can say "the background check was clean, don't blame us"

That's bullshit if you ask me. We shouldn't be treating constitutional rights as priveliges, felons are barred from owning guns as a matter of public safety (at least that's the idea), it's not supposed to be a punitive measure.

I especially hate that the "no felons" rule is a federal law, yet it takes state laws into account. If I get busted with a gram of weed in MA, it's a $100 ticket/civil infraction, no worse than a speeding ticket, no impact on whether or not I can own a gun. I get busted with a gram of weed in AZ, it's a felony and I'm barred from owning guns. If there if going to be a federal law restricting gun ownership (which is already bullshit), it should be based on uniform standards, not widely varying state laws.

seems that the states have the sovereignty:

Amendment 10 - Powers of the States and People. Ratified 12/15/1791. Note

The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.
