Ok first off this is his gf... I'm looking to get him one for christmas and I've found 2 that would work but one is a straight edge and the other is serrated. When he told me he wanted one he never specified which he would prefer... so if there is anyone that could help me out in this area I would appreciate it. Which type would a marine prefer??? thanks!!

I would go serrated. The serratoins saw through lots of stuff where a straight edge would take multiple passes. As far as sharpening goes, it does take a lot to really dull serrations where they would need to be sharpened.

i have a Ka-Bar black, serrated. it's fantastic. i've used it for primitive/survival camping, and as far as knives go, it's damn good.

with serrations, the only time i can see wanting no serrations is if the knife is only for stabbing, in which case, serrations might make it even harder to pull the knife out of a bone or something (it's going to be hard with a straight edge, but serrations are even worse). if he wants this knife for show, who knows. your guess is as good as mine. but for actual usefulness and practicality as a tool, you can cut a whole lot more with a serrated blade. i don't own a single straight-edged blade for that very reason.

throats is for wusses. stick him in the side of the neck, then cut forward towards the vocal chords. or, just shove it in and up through the base of the skull. either way.

Slitting the throat makes too much noise :o They end up making a semi-loud gurgling noise. Stick it up thru the base of the skull and it severs the spinal cord. Some useful tips courtesy of my uncle the SEAL  This book has some helpful hints too lol
