Shot a band today and without my lens hood, I probably would have shattered my 70-200 2.8L.

Thank god for the strong and durable body of the 5D2 also. Withstood quite a tumble.

Now I have some battle scars on my gear

bro, you should always have the hood on, stray light on the front element can hurt the contrast of your shots, even if you can't see it.

It's "supposed to" be for increasing contrast by reducing stray light from hitting the glass, but I use it 99% for lens protection and I'm sure many others here do to.

Keeps stray light from hitting your lens and ruining the shot. Always use a hood.

The hood helps your lens from getting f/STDs.

I use mine for scooping extra light into my lens and then can use a faster shutter.

and as a place for putting stickers, adds horsepower to the lens

Was going around stage to get a shot up front up toward the singers and guitarist and I did not have the strap around my neck and my foot caught the strap and as I kicked my leg over a bench it took the camera with it. :noes: Just picked it up and kept on going.

    Just a few shots
