Was just wondering if any of you Coast Guard guys/gals had any more info on this. I am very interested in enlisting into the Coast Guard, however I know there isn't a specific rate for law enforcement, which is what I am interested in.

I've searched forums and keep hearing rumors of one in the making (Maritime Enforcement Specialist?). I've also read that it is supposed to come about sometime in 2010, is there a specific date on this?

Also, will this be open to new recruits or just transfers from other rates? I do not have any LE experience but I do have a bachelors degree in criminal justice. How would the USCG handle people who were joining now but wanted this rate? I think I read in teh barracks that someone went in with no rate and was just on hold for maritime enforcement.

Any info helps, thanks in advance

ME rate is slowly opening. It deals mainly with maritime law. USCG is open contract so after your first unit you can choose an A school (no ME school yet) and become rated (E4)... you can then lateral into the ME Rate.

Joining the USCG is tough. Good Luck. PM me with questions and I will give you an honest, non-recruiter answer.

    Straight from the A-School list:

    New Business:
On 01 October 2009 EST, we will start accepting requests to be placed on the ME “A” school list. Email requests to
    FS1 Bollhorst.
    ME “A” School Eligibility Critieria:
    1. Security Clearance - Eligible for a SECRET security clearance. Commands must certify that the member is a U. S. citizen
and has an approved NACLC security package on file.
    2. Lautenberg Amendment Compliance - A member who is prohibited from carrying a weapon in accordance with the
Domestic Violence Offender Gun Ban is ineligible for the ME rating.
    3. Color vision - Members must possess normal color vision.
    4. Weight standards - Members must be in compliance with Commandant weight standards.
    5. ASVAB scores - Must have achieved a combined score of 100 between Verbal Reasoning (VE) and Arithmetic Reasoning
    (AR).
    6. Physical Fitness – Need not have all physical fitness standards as pre-requisites, though completion of either the Boarding
Officer and Boat Crew Physical Fitness test or the Deployable Specialized Forces Tier II Physical Fitness test after 01
January 2009 will be a ME “A” school graduation requirement.
    2
    7. Weapons Qualifications - Need not have all weapons qualifications as pre-requisites, though full weapons qualifications
will be a ME "A" school graduation requirement. Full weapons qualifications include: judgmental pistol course, basic and
practical pistol, basic and combat rifle, and shotgun.
    8. Driver's License - A valid state-issued driver's license is required.
    9. Obligated service - 24 months of obligated service from their graduation date.

Keep in mind that the list is going to sky rocket for the first few years. ME rates aren't the only rates that are going to be enforcing law. You can be on a boarding team as any other rate (although I've never seen any FS's as BTM's).

MEs are going to be the primary Boarding Officers... directing the BTMs and crew during LE ops.

MKs, BMs, DCs, EMs will still remain fully qualified BTMs and BOs and be pulled off normal duty to conduct LE ops.

ME will just be the leader. When not conducting LE ops I am sure they will be training and training on other stuff. Not sure what their "real" job will be.

Don't ask him shit... he will lie to your face anyways.

If you don't get what you want in writing... punch him in his face and go to another office.

JK... don't hit him... but srsly... do not believe most of what he says. PM me after your visit with his name and how it went.
