While traveling out of town, I fantasized about syncing my iPod with my desktop remotely over the internet.

Has anyone ever heard of a sort of "virtual USB" scheme which would work as an adapter in this way? e.g. my desktop has a virtual USB port, my laptop has the actual USB port, and through some network connection my desktop sees the laptop's port as one of its own.

FWIW I have macs, but at this point I am just curious if this is technically feasible on any platform.

instead of the usb protocol traversing the internet, why not just point itunes at a network file system?
