Tell ex-military about membership before Dec. 31

    Posted:12/08/2006
Do you have friends who left the military in 2005 but aren't USAA members? Tell them there’s still time to purchase auto, home, personal property, renters insurance, and other products with us.
But after Dec. 31, they’ll no longer be eligible. That means they won’t be able to get our low, member-only rates or pass membership on to their children.

Hmmm, correct me if I am wrong, but they aren't exactly scrutinizeing anything when you register for service.
I remember when I signed up as a cadet, they just asked if i was contracted, and that was it. I got an email. Im a member.

So theorhetically you could lie about it.

I'm guessing that will probably change. You will probably have to show some proof that you are elegible for an account after the 31st. Something like a verified .mil email account or a faxed copy of military ID.

You can join now, but if you wait until after December 31st, you will no longer be able to join. It costs nothing to join.
