"In most cases a Nikon Factory Demo is a unit that has been used as a Nikon display piece or as a "Salesman's Sample". They have never been owned by a consumer and have minimal to no use. Each unit is individually checked and tested before it is shipped to us from Nikon. Where some may have small marks or slight imperfections in the finish, it is important to note that the unit is in brand new operating condition and is covered by Cameta Camera's warranty for one full year on all parts and labor."

    yay or nay?

seems to me that this has an advantage of buying used because its probably seen less use, its checked and tested at Nikon, and it has a 1 year warranty.

My experience with this camera + current lenses I own + my budget make a D50 the perfect choice for me.

    thanks! anyone else? thoughts?

I would have gone for maybe a 350D or a D40...but I had a couple nikon prime lenses already AND they won't AF with the D40 or D40x. so....

when they say "display piece", do they include those cameras that are out in the open at best buy and get fucked with every which way by every moron in the store that has never seen a "big camera"?

    if so, fuck that.

I'm still weary of this demo camera thing.

how about a factory refurbished d50 with a 90-day nikon warranty? www.sigma4less.com has a great deal on a refurb body

If it's got a warranty and it's a good price I don't really see a problem with it. If there's something wrong with it and it doesn't work, return it :dunno:

yea, that's what i'm saying. but i ended up finding a better deal by buying a refurbished (by nikon) body ($415 vs. $500 +)

No, the stores sell those from their inventory at a big discount. Sometimes that works out to be a good thing ;)

Bought my D50 as the demo from CompUSA. 17,000 exposures later have had nary a problem.
