Received my CMMG .22 conversion kit and two 25 rd magazines today from Black Dog Machine. Ordered Tuesday

Probably heading out tomorrow to dump a couple hundred rounds through one of the ARs. Best part is that I get to shoot the hell out of my AR and it will only cost me about $5 in ammo :bigthumb:

Question ... I have a 'dedicated' upper I'm going to use with this (had a spare barrel from another upper I built, put the barrel in a spare stripped upper, etc...) so I don't need a gas system on this upper. Does it make sense to plug/block the gas port? I was thinking about some JBWeld in the gas tube hole in the front sight base. That way there is no permanent change to the barrel. I can switch out the front site base and turn it back into a standard 5.56 upper if I wanted, but for now it removes unnecessary components and keeps all the .22lr carbon fouling out of the chamber.

 I'm very happy with my CMMG kit. I think spikes tactical sells a plug for cheap. It'll probably be easier to take in and out than JB weld.

For those to work all you need is the bolt and magazine? no new upper or other parts?

Are there any chances a 22lr could wear out a 5.56 barrel ?

That's one of the reasons I built a dedicated upper from spare parts. Not that it would wear it out, but just the thought of shooting a bunch of .22lr down a nice 5.56 barrel kind of bothered me. Since I had the barrel and a stripped upper, it was cheaper than buying a dedicated upper from Spikes or Model1. Just had to buy the CMMG kit and a free float forearm to complete it.

Yea I though about this too, I mean it would be about the sameas a decent 10/22

    Upper 100, Barrel 120, CMMG Kit 200, Handguard 100.

Dont need to have a gas tube or block

I have never, ever seen a shot out .22 barrel. .22 is so soft and moves so slow I think it would take an extremely long time to wear out a barrel designed for 5.56.

I'm building a separate upper for .22, they are cheap, might as well. It's mainly so .22LR will stay subsonic through my can though.

That's part of my reasoning for the SBR questions in my other thread. This is going to be a 14.5" (for now, maybe shorter later) and then adding a suppressor in the near future.

Holy crap! Who would have thought a .22 would be so much fun? I have a nice 10/22 and I love to shoot it, but this should really be a blast, especially once I have a suppressor on it.

btw, I checked Spike's site for the plug. They mention that it comes with their conversion kit, but I can't find it listed separately. I emailed them about it, so hopefully they will sell it to me cheap and I don't have to JB Weld my front site base ;) Thanks for the heads up.

I dumped as bunch of money into a 10/22 also...and now it doesn't get shot.

What twist rate to do you have in your barrel? 1/7 in my LMT works surprisingly well, but 1/12 should work better so I got that for my dedicated build.

Spikes has a few extra features such as an o-ring in the chamber adapter and it's also plated which looks nicer. Both have great customer service and run good. The spikes kit is a little bit more, however. Also, the CMMG kit will not run of full auto if you ever have access to a m16.

Yeah it definitely does. I can't say it runs any better though because my CMMG kit runs great. Either way you can't go wrong.

Even though I ordered from BDM (and was very happy with the service and fast shipping), if you are going to order a bunch of mags also you might check out palmetto. They have pretty good prices for bundles with mags...
