I use a machine similar to this at the gym

I do 150lbs on it and whenever I step off the machine, i get bad pain in my upper back from the stress it puts on it. Is it normal for this to give me back pain? I'm 100% sure my form is correct

I'm thinking I'll just bring a piece of wood to the gym and do calf raises on that with the barbel on the back of my neck. what do you think?

Are you leaning forward slightly while your upper body is back? Where are your shoulders positioned in alignment with your feet?

You could do calf raises on the leg press in between sets (if you do leg press). You could also stand on a couple plates that are stacked on top of each other and do single leg. To add resistance you can hold a plate in your hand on the same side.

what you could do is calf raises just on plate in the front with heels on the floor for 100 reps, then toes on the floor for another 100. I get the same pain you do on the standing one only after im at the 75rep on my 100 sets. On sets of 15-25 no pain. HOw many reps are you doing

well regardless, thats probably something you need to get looked at. you cant just substitute for another exercise and ignore the fact thats theres a sharp pain in your upper back.

sure, that's not a problem as long as you're still getting the full range of motion.
