    Hi

In the near future, I will be buying a Macbook Pro (2.2 ghz).

It comes with 2 gigs of ram. I am not paying Apple $500 to upgrade to 4 gigs, so I am going to do it myself.

The computer comes with 2x1gb ram. Does that mean I will have to replace both sticks with 2gb pieces? (buy 4gb of ram total to replace)

I am doing this because I want to run parallels smoothly. Would 2gb of Ram be enough for that? (I am not going to be doing heavy graphic and movie work, some photoshop...)

Or should I just replace one stick with a 2gb and make it total 3gb...

    Thanks

2gb is enough for alot of things. If you do upgrade. check out new egg for a 2x2gb for about 179. nice and cheap for 4gbs

Yes, to upgrade to 4GB you get 2 x 2GB chips. Other World Computing has great pricing on RAM verified to work with Macs and they'll even buy your old RAM back. macsales.com

I was under the impression the MBP won't actually use more than 3gb though.

the newer ones handle 4 iirc, but go back a couple months and they only handle 3. At least that's what I thought I read here somewhere.

Basically the first gen of MacBook Pros that are Duo Core can only take 2GB. When they went to Core 2 Duo they can take up to 3GB. The newest ones released within the last couple months with Santa Rosa processors can do 4GB.
