So after installing Boxee, I've realized my 1.66GHz Core Duo Mac Mini with 2GB of RAM will handle everything except 1080P .mkv files. :( I'm a cheap bastard and would prefer to not build a whole new HTPC if I can avoid it. Thus, I am considering swapping the CPU in my Mac Mini for something more powerful.

What kind of proc is necessary to handle 1080P? Will a 2.16GHz Core 2 Duo (T7400) handle it or do I need the 2.33GHz (T7600) model?

I've been doing some research and it seems that the 2.33GHz model is the way to go for 1080P. $250 is the going rate and that saves me a fuckload of money compared to building a new PC.

Yessir. If its an Intel model you can use any of the even-numbered T7x00 Core 2 Duo's. T7600 is the fastest you can put in there at 2.33GHz and they go for ~$250 on eBay.

With a new CPU, more RAM, and a 7200RPM laptop drive you can make an old Core Duo Mac Mini into a very decent everyday computer or HTPC.

    Impressive!

Now to find a used base model, jack up the RAM, HDD and CPU!

Im surprised the shitty video card can support 1080p... my MacBook 2.0 C2D can't :(

Apparently x264 video decoding is handled by the CPU on everything except the newest NVidia-based Macs.

And that is because of OS X. With bootcamp and XP, it can.

While you still have your current settup, can the 1.66GHz C1D handle 720p .mkv files?

It handles 720 rips just fine. My 1080P rip of Pineapple Express plays pretty good, only stutters in some places, but the 1080P rips of Lost Season 4 are just terrible.
