I got a good deal on a dell inspiron through work since we ordered a ton of them.

    I got it with the 8600gt, 2 gigs ram and a 250hd

After hooking it up to my 2407wfp and 2005wfp the screen would get all crazy and have purple lines/chunks on the screen.

Did some research and more than likely the shitty 300watt powersupply couldnt keep up.

I called tiger direct and over did it with a OCZ 700watt power supply since I want to add another hard drive and video card and do more ram.

After tying to plug it in tonight the motherboard plug is wrong. I was wrong and trusted the sales rep on the phone regarding if the power supply would work.

It fits in the case but the pins arent the right shape.

So, first person to post a reasonably priced (under $120) 450+ watt power supply that will plug and play into my dell inspiron 531 will get a 10$ paypal payment from me.
Im doing this cause I dont really know that much about cpu hardware (obvious since I ordered a powersupply for the dell)

    what's wrong with the OCZ?
your mobo has a 24-pin mainboard connector and a 4-pin CPU power connector.

The OCZ 700W has a 20+4-pin mainboard connector and a 4-Pin and 8-pin CPU power connector.

The 20+4-pin can be plugged in to your mobo. Just make sure you don't mix the 4-pin auxiliary with the 4-pin CPU power connector.

they arent the same type of pin whole shapes
some pins are square and others are 6 sided with the top two corners have a 45* shape

and 700 watts is way overkill, that PCP&C 470 will do you just fine

Wait. Is this a Vostro, or an Inspiron? Isn't Vostro it's own line now?

Oh geez, I thought you had a laptop.

If the PC&PC psu's list Dell at all, then they must be using the same plug connectors.

But you could always call them to be sure. A company like those guys is going to be very accessible.

That's a good point. You know, I half thought of that, but I thought the notch on the plug would be obvious, and figured Dell must be using a proprietary plug.
Threadstarter should take a closer look to be sure.

Dell does (at least they used to) use a proprietary plug, thats why PCP&C makes Dell specific PSUs

Is it maybe just reversed? Break the plastic notch off if thats the deal. Dell will overcharge you for their proprietary components.

No, dont break the OCZ power supply, it is way overkill for what he needs. Find out if the $100 PCP&C 470 power supply will work and take the probably $150 OCZ one back.

Dell calls my Dimension C521 a Inspiron too... All I listen for is the model number...

I also have a Dimension E521 case here and they would call that an Inspiron as well...

built a new desk over the weekend. Im thinking of seling my 2005fwp and getting two 20" 4:3 monitors since the height is the same as the 24"

or just getting another 2005fwp off ebay. but im really leaning towards 2x 20"s

im gona call that place in the morning and hopefully the powersupply works out...

the 24" is on an articulating arm. comes out 15" or so 360* swivel and all.
