I recently got a free laptop (that i know came with usb2.0) so I formatted it and installed a fresh copy of XP pro on it, along with SP2. For some reason the USB ports aren't reading as 2.0. When I open my device manager it tells me i have: Intel(r) 82801FB/FBM USB Universal Host Controller Do I have to manually update these, if so how?

Download all Windows Updates, including optional driver updates, then delete the USB ports from Device Manager and reboot. If Windows doesn't re-detect them as USB 2.0 ports, then they aren't really USB 2.0.

Windows automatically detects USB. If they aren't displaying as such, the drives aren't 2.0.

Well, it is possible, being a rebuilt machine, that the drivers for his chipset are effed up. That's why I suggested updating all drivers and re-detecting the USB controller.

If it was a USB adapter, it might need drivers.
Not so likely on a notebook I suppose, but worth checking.

 worked, you are a gentleman and a scholar.

I don't know why it didn't detect it before this. :hs:

Standard procedure when hardware isn't working right. Glad it worked.
