I need help I am looking to upgrade/build a new computer.

My computer is currently running a amd 2700+ and in the good old days that was a good processor, but I am lost now I have no idea which is the latest and greatest.

Is it possible to upgrade my computer for 500 bucks?:noes:

What am I looking for in a processor?

What is a cheap reliable processor?

What am I looking at in a motherboard?

All these questions and more are looming in my head, so OT:T please help me.

A lot of new stuff will come out in the next 3 months or so.
What's best today will be 2nd rate by then.
I'd suggest you wait it out,... then take advantage of any price drops.

I saw when you posted the list in the other thread, and man I gotta say that AMD is gonna be in big trouble if they don't have something impressive coming out soon. The 65 watt cpu's are the ones that are impressing me.

    Intel Yorkfield (Quads)
    Core 2 Extreme QX9650 ($999) – 3.00 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB, 2 X 6 MB L2 cache, TDP=130 W
    Core 2 Q9550 ($530) – 2.83 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB, 2 X 6 MB L2 cache, TDP=95 W
    Core 2 Q9450 ($316) – 2.66 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB, 2 X 6 MB L2 cache, TDP=95 W *** This is sweet :x:
    Core 2 Q9300 ($266) – 2.50 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB, 2 X 3 MB L2 cache, TDP=95 W

    Intel Wolfdale (Duos)
    Core 2 E8500 ($266) – 3.16 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB, 6 MB L2 cache, TDP=65 W
    Core 2 E8400 ($183) – 3.00 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB, 6 MB L2 cache, TDP=65 W
    Core 2 E8300 ($TBD) – 2.83 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB, 6 MB L2 cache, TDP=65 W
    Core 2 E8200 ($163) – 2.66 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB, 6 MB L2 cache, TDP=65 W

    The E8400 is 3freakingghz for $183.

AMD must be shitting themselves over that.

That's the perfect motherboard for somebody just getting ready to upgrade for the first time in a while.
Pci expressx16 with lots of regular pci slots for older hardware.

For an overclocker, the similar Gigabyte Intel chipset board with an E4300 would work pretty good too, for a little less money.

Of course, waiting until November is a good idea too.

Yeah, that's the deal to get for a dual core.

It's really tough for AMD. Even if they close the performance gap, the price war will hurt them the most.

Still kind of amazing that Intel can afford to have a price war at the same time they're dropping billions on new factories.

    Well,.. its no surprise.

    http://www.marketwatch.com/news/sto...x?guid={A990D5DC-AE19-412B-A340-A7430C908CF5}

The price war will be more interesting this time around.
Phenom costs more to manufacture than the Athlons.
Penryn costs less to manufacture than the Conroes.

Since there are no benchmarks for Phenom yet,.. most consider Barcelona VS Harpertown (45nm) benchmarks as the preview of Phenom VS Penryn.

If Phenom is anything like Barcelona, AMD is really in deep shit.

Keep in mind the only Penryn debuting this year will be the QX9650... all the lower end processors will be out in January.

No idea about laptops as I don't like them, but there have been directx 10 cards out for a while and they aren't extremely expensive. It of course depends on your definition of extremely expensive, but the 8800 series are good and won't bankrupt a small country.
