My friend who is not yet 18 was supposed to go with us today (also accompanied by his mom for consent) to get his first tattoo, this is in California. The tattoo shop said that even with parental consent and accompanyment that they would not do the tattoo.. is this bullshit or is there a law?

:dunno: I know in Illinois under 21 you have to have parental consent for a tattoo, yet at 18 you can pierce anything, star in porn, die for your country in the military but you can't get a tattoo in Illinois. A few people I went to high school got tattoos before they were 18, and they said it was a PITA to find a place that even with parental consent to get a place to do it. there can be a number of reasons why a place wouldn't want to put one on someone under 18, one thing I can think of is mom says it's ok and goes with Jr but dad says no way in hell and mom and dad are divorced. and there is the will Jr really like said tattoo once they grow up? I got my first one at 19 it's a barb wire band around my left arm and I doubt I would of gotten that as my first if I was going out to get a tattoo today at age 26. Don't get me wrong I do like the tattoo it looks good, but as the years have gone by I have said I should of gotten this or that in the same place.

i got my first tat when i was 17 with parent's consent. i had been thinking of it for a long time and told them i would do it when i turned 18 anyway so why not just go and consent.

Last I checked, section 653 of the California Penal Code states: Every person who tattoos or offers to tattoo a person under the age of 18 years is guilty of a misdemeanor.
As used in this section, to "tattoo" means to insert pigment under
the surface of the skin of a human being, by pricking with a needle
or otherwise, so as to produce an indelible mark or figure visible
    through the skin.
This section is not intended to apply to any act of a licensed
practitioner of the healing arts performed in the course of his
    practice.

Thats all it states and there is no exception if a minor has parental consent.

I was told around here you can get one at like 15-16 with a parent. :dunno:
