I'm trying to get a user set up in our office. He has moved here from another office so I want to download his mail from his old office Exchange server. I was thinking it would go something like this...

    - logs in and pulls all of his email down from the old office Exchange server
    - I contact the sys admin to delete his email account from the server
    - I Sync up both mailservers
    - I create his mail account on our server
    - he logs into our server

The problem is, when I try to log in and pull all of his email it says...

Unable to open Outlook.ost. You must connect to your Microsoft Exchange server at least once before you can access bla bla bla

running Office 2000 Pro on Windows 2000 pro
    Exchange 5.5

Anyone seen this before? Nothing on Technet that I could find.

Anyone know a good place to find an answer to this?

yes, I've tried deleting it, didn't work
I tried moving his .OST from the last machine he was on to he new machine didn't work.
I've tried everything. I think the problem is the connection to the Exchange server is too slow and it's timing out. I've decided just to have the admin at his other office export his mailbox to a .pst and burn it to cd then mail it to me.

What did you do? You cant just 'import' an .ost into outlook.

    here is how it went

I had to coordinate with his old office admin...

    - called admin and had him tranfer users email into .pst, zip it, and send it over the WAN to me
    - Then had him delete the users account after opening .pst to make sure it was all there.
    - sync the server up (directory replication) so that I could see that the account was deleted
    - Create users new Exchange account here
    - Sync up all sites so that the change gets replicated out
    - Load .pst onto users desktop computer, copy folders and files to mailserver

    viola! :)
