I've gone to network connections, checked properties and they all seem legit. But when I plug in the line from my cable modem, I get the limited or no connectivity error.

I've tried to set up a new connection but I can't get it to work that way either. It's a direct connection via cable, so I can't figure out what I'm overlooking here...shouldn't be this hard?

If you turned on the computer, then plugged in the modem there's your first problem. You can try just restarting and see what sort of ip you get. Right now you probably have a 169.

    start > run > cmd> ipconfig
