I just won a $250 gift certificate from a raffle on a site. its to newegg.com so i figured i would buy something to replace my old olympus 3.2 camera. i am not a hardcore photographer and i just mainly point and shoot. the most important things is the load time and the shutter time. basically i want to whip it out and take a fast picture with pretty good results. i also want something small. so here are the choices i have from newegg.com $200-$260

    pentax s55

    konica minolta dimage x1

    fuji Z1

    olympus stylus 600

any one of these i should not get? or any recommendations? thanks

For shutter time - I've read good things about the Sony cameras. I used to own a DSC-W5 (not exactly ultra compact, but certainly not very big) that had a nearly-instant shutter release, very nice to use, and memorystick pro is VERY fast, also nice :) - and very good quality videos of unlimited length, as well.

I see you're not including the memory card in your $250 budget. Remember that for a good card, I recommend a 1gb/fast speed, it can be around $60-80 depending on type and brand, with SD/Compact flash at the lower end and Sony's proprietary card at the high end.

Anyway I recommend http://www.imaging-resource.com/ for reviews - just plug in the model and you'll get a very detailed review. Go to "picky details" for shutter speeds and whatnot.

thanks, i have a 512 xd, and a 512 SD card so the mem card price was no factored in. i did not see any sony's in that price range at newegg.com.

the problem i have is that all the best buy and comp usa stores i go to do not have all of them for side to side comparison. even if they have them there they would not all work (no battery).

i will check out the site and check out that sony u mentioned

    The DSC-W5 is here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16830150058

But that's very strange, as it used to be on newegg for $265! Perhaps they raised prices as Christmas is coming, so there is a lot more money floating around. The DSC-W7 (same camera, but 7.2 megapixels instead of 5.0), was that price just a month or two ago.

Perhaps wait until newegg lowers its prices a few weeks to a month from now...

But then again I must mention that with the purhcase of that Sony you'd have to get a memorystick Pro. As there are plenty of other options out there, probably comparable or better in factors like size and innovation, I'd look elsewhere so you can use the cards you have.

I personally like the Canon SD30 for a basic on the fly camera.
