There was a bunch of news about MMA in Vancouver recently, if it should be sanctioned or not, and not once was the fucking sport called MMA, its Ultimate Fighting. Fucking disgusting, UFC created a sport name out of their brand.
...bring MMA back to days of Pride being #1. Fuck seeing all these matchups anyway, all my Pride favs minus Quinton havnt done well anyway.
Do you call it a band-aid or a adhesive bandage?
Do you call it a q-tip or a cotton swab?
I can go on all day.
Its called marketing. Take some business classes and see why they do it.
I Know what he means. My friends ask my how my 'ultimate fighting' is going, I give them the look (I only do grappling, and only with a gi)
But what I'm talking to about is the pervasiveness of the term now. When a brand becomes so powerful that trained reporters don't even realize that there is an alternate term to use and to research then the marketing department at Zuffa has done their job well. And I respect that.
I don't have a problem with it being called "ultimate fighting"
ultimate fighting is gay.
MMA is cool.
But for the most part people don't know what MMA is. I wish it were different, but being that I have a marketing degree I really admire how the UFC has branded and positioned their selves. It take a lot of time, effort, and money to be able to pull that off.
a) When was Pride ever #1 and b) having all of your favorite Pride fighters get their shit pushed in by UFC fighters should tell you something. I hope Fedor signs with the UFC just so that we can see him get smashed by Couture.
The Fertita brothers are tied at 380th for richest men in the US
Define what makes an organization #1?
If your talking about filling stadium's than the UFC has NOTHING on Pride or K-1.
If your talking about talent then I would still say that Pride has the better talent pool. They fighters havn't made HUGE waves in the UFC, but fighters have their off days too.
If your talking about revenue streams then Pride and K-1 still pulled in more.
The only thing that the UFC has over pride is business stability.
And I'm not saying Couture can't beat Fedor...but to say "smashed" is a bit of an overstatement.
pride was number 1 from 2000-2006
I realize that Pride put more butts in their seats at the shows but has Pride ever come close to the UFC as far as pay per views or dvds sold? I assume that that's where most of their revenue comes from. Ticket sales are a pretty big chunk but they're limited to the number of seats in the house.
I'm sure pride pulled in more from TV deals(PPV in the states and Sky TV in Japan). And Pride STILL sells a shit ton of DVDs.
Plus you are talking 15K people go to a UFC event, 90K PLUS to a Pride event.
I realize that. How much did tickets cost for Pride? How much did they cost for a UFC show? I'm sure that Pride had better numbers than the UFC back in the early days but towards the end of their run (the last year or two) the UFC had to have overtaken them.
I'm not sure where to find the data for that...but I would be willing to bet that even at the end of their run, they were pulling in more revenue. But just because you have a large revenue stream doesn't mean you have a large profit margin. I miss pride
Well I'm pretty sure that they both sell out wherever they go. A few months ago when the De La Hoya/Mayweather fight was getting hyped I saw some stats on pay per view buys. The UFC was blowing everyone out of the water. I don't know where to find that info now, either
I have no doubt that the UFC has more US PPV buys than pride, but Pride pulled a shit ton of money off the SKY TV deal, thats why when SKY TV pulled, pride went under.
Pride put 90,000 people in the Osaka Super Dome. I don't ever see the UFC filling that many seats.
With a solid enough card I bet Fedor/Couture could hit that
