I usually have no problem with spyware, I run several tools and keep things locked up pretty tight.

strangely I've been getting IE popups and can't find any processes that explain it. i ran a hijackthis log and can't find anything obvious that could be the cause of the problem

    any suggestions?

    Use FireFox?

I use Windows Defender, AdAware, and SpyBot and never have any problems.

check the currently loaded add ons in IE. There's been a growing trend with adware programs loading stuff in there.
Click tools, manage add ons. You should see stuff from SUn microsystems, adobe, possible windows messenger, macromedia.

Explorer.EXE is often a trojan. I believe windows explorer runs under explorer.exe

I don't like browser helper objects. I would delete all of them except the
    adobe and spybot s&d ones.

    You're so fucking annoying.

So random, yes, but I'd thought I'd share my feelings. Have a great day.

I'm not harping on you specifically, but what is the deal with people running multiple spyware programs at once? I run a single spyware program - Symantec Antivirus corp. edition - and other than that I use my brain and don't click on suspicious links. Where is everybody getting all this spyware from, that they need to give away half their CPU power to thwart it?

Symantec is the biggest piece of crap out there. We are running it at work and it's constantly popping up saying it caught whatever piece of spyware but it can't fix it.
I will be so happy when our licenses expire and we can turf it.

I believe you've mistaken what the popup means.
When it says that it can't repair it, it doesn't mean that it is still a threat to your computer.
It auto quarantines it so that it can't do any damage.
You can manually delete the file if it bothers you to have it sitting there.

I run Spybot, Symantic, Adaware, and Spysweeper because I've noticed that some don't catch them all...plust I'm paranoid.

That's quite a penis obsession you've got there. I bet you're one of those guys who glances to the side at the urinals in public bathrooms, aren't you?

Must be you don't have it configured right. I had my computer un-firewalled on a university network for a whole semester (during the Blaster crisis, no less) because I was using it as a file server for my computer lab activities, and Symantec caught every single virus -- multiple viruses per day, even. The scheduled virus scans never showed a thing, and I'm still using the same installation of XP today. The reason why Symantec says that it can't repair a lot of files is because those files aren't infected, they are the infection; that is, they aren't MSWord documents with malicious macros hiding inside, they're flat out viruses and deleting the virus would delete the whole file, which is what ends up happening anyway, and Symantec reports it as a deletion instead of a repair for that reason.

It's just a goof, ya big goof.

And I'm way too intent on holding my own massive appendage to worry about the guy's next to me.
