Back in April I went to the Army recruiter's office to enlist and all that. From the start I wanted to be a Ranger so when I went I told the recruiters the deal and blah blah blah they said yeah sure no problem here's the contract see ya at Ft Benning. My contract was 11x and they said to not worry about Ranger school being garaunteed on the contract because after basic they will come around asking who wants airborne? who wants rip? My recruiters saying Option 40 isnt necessary to be on my contract. So I was like yeah..cool i guess and signed it like an ass.

I talk to my brother whose in ROTC at UMich and he's rips me about the whole situation because he says I need Option 40 on my contract or im not garaunteed shit and I might not get a chance to try out for Rangers. The whole reason I wanted to join the Army in the first place. So Im like shit the recruiter kinda duped me. And I know the recruiters will tell you anything you want to hear and all that so i wasnt jaded. I ask my brother what to do and he says hold on Ill see what I can do. So he talks to his Lt. at UMich who then gets on the horn with my recruiters and chews em out. I go back to my recruiter and hes like ok Option 40 here you go. Go back to Ft Dix resign my contract with a $10k bonus and im all set to ship Aug 8th.

Now go to the end of June and I fuck myself over so hard. I get shitfaced wasted off some Captains and end up punchin a car window which fractures my pinky finger horribly. Go to Dix to push my ship date back and resign my contract. So now I ship Sept 14 with my contract saying just 11x. Now my rectuiters arent the total dickbags im making them out to be. The counselor at Dix sympathyzes with me totally and says theres nothing i can do to get you Option 40 with your leave date being as is. And FUCK waiting any longer cause ive waited long enough and im tired of sittin here with my thumb up my ass. Both of my recruiters (one who is a jump master) keep telling me spots will open because people with option 40 will drop or whatever. And i believe them because shit one is a jump master, and also same thing happened to my friend who just left for parris island. He wasnt supposed to leave till Aug 21st but he was on standby till then, and a spot opened up so he left 2.5 weeks early.

Basically what Im asking...even though Option 40 is not on my contract will I still have any kind of chance for making a run at airborne/rip?

if your just 11x your basically fucked. they do offer airborne slots rarely in Infantry OSUT. usually the honor grad can get airborne and rip. now if you had airborne in contract but not the option 40 you can sign up for RIP at airborne school. but in your case its gonna be hard to get airborne. you shouldve made sure you the option 40 bro, i did and didnt have to worry about any of the shit. sorry :(

QFT.... I had to walk out of MEPs when I wanted to go 31S from infantry. The recruiter kept that because I'm MOS Q'd I could only go back to infantry. Guess what after 1 hour they came back and said here is your 31S.

Well since we're on the subject. How is ranger training broken down? After airborne i go to RIP for about 3 weeks(?), then how long does the real ranger school last for? And what kinda water training do they go through?

When I went through OSUT they offered RIP slots to those who wanted them and who the DS thought had a chance. I almost changed my mind but decided not to. Most of the guys who go to RIP quit or don't make it.

One surefire way of getting airborne is by having an airborne unit as a yuor first duty station. As for getting ranger, you can try requesting it when you get to your duty station and you might actually get it.

I came in under a 11x contract as well but I also had Airborne Ranger in my contract....I took the Airborne physical at the MEPS station so I knew I was in....so if you take a Airborne physical before you ship off to Benning you will be good regardless...they are always looking for people for the Airborne and being that you are Infantry....you will goto a Airborne unit and they will all but twist your arm to go to Ranger school when you get to your first duty station.

RIP is not hard. It's all mental....you have to put up with being tired, hungry, physically exhausted but if you have the proper mental state and make up your mind "I will do this", then it isen't that bad.

No, it is just a physical....the Docs check you out and see if you are fit (limber and all that) to under go Airborne training.....you don't do the 5 miles and pull-ups and all that until you actually start training.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't start doing PT now....it's always good to go into basic in some kind of shape. Nothing pisses us Drill Sergeants off more than an out of shape individual. Start doing push-ups (using the proper form) and sit-ups and running on your own everyday.
