Despite recent reports that former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz (15-5 MMA, 14-5 UFC) will face Keith Jardine at UFC 71, Sam Caplan of CBS Sportsline.com reported this morning that UFC president Dana White told him that Ortiz will instead face Jardine’s training partner, Rashad Evans (10-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC).

You can read his short bulletin on his personal blog, fiveouncesofpain.com. He says the interview with White will be posted on CBS Sportsline.com in the next couple of days.

Ortiz was originally rumored for the UFC 70 card in England and, at one time, was expected to face Forrest Griffin. However, last week MMAWeekly.com bumped him from the UFC 70 card to UFC 71’s. The Vegas-based UFC 71 event is expected to feature a main event with Chuck Liddell, though his opponent is unknown at this point.

Evans, the heavyweight winner on the second season of The Ultimate Fighter, has emerged as one of the light heavyweight division’s fastest-rising contenders. He’s picked up wins over Brad Imes, Sam Hoger, Stephan Bonnar, Jason Lambert and Sean Salmon.

The former Michigan State wrestler, now training with Greg Jackson’s camp in New Mexico, has shown marked improvement with his stand-up game.

The UFCjunkie.com team spent some time over the weekend with Evans, and he had no news (even off the record) about his next fight, so this reported fight with Ortiz seems to be a very recent development.

Once Caplan’s story is posted, we’ll be sure to mention it here.

For now, here’s the latest rumored UFC 71 card:
    UFC 71 — May 26, 2007 (Las Vegas, Nev.)
    Chuck Liddell vs. TBA
    Tito Ortiz vs. Rashad Evans
    Karo Parisyan vs. Josh Burkman
    Eric Schafer vs. Sean Salmon
    Chris Leben vs. Kalib Starnes

I'm hoping he'll be a prelim. He doesn't deserve to be on a main card in the eyes of hardcore fans, but unfortunately he's a name for the TUF crowd. And we all know the UFC would rather make the TUF crowd happy than the hardcore crowd.

I think TBA has a good shot against Liddell... unless they pull him from the card and replace him with another fighter at the last minute like they always seem to do...

TBA is a beast in the gym, but always seems to get pulled when the event rolls around.

I hope Leben gets destroyed so we don't have to sit through another of his fights on PPV again.

Starnes beat Jason MacDonald who everyone was overhyping a week ago...I think Kalib stands a decent chance of beating Leben, at least a better one that Jason did

From a personal stand point Leban is a tool, but I do like to watch his fights win or lose.

I think this would actually be better. Granted everyone wants to see Lidell Rampage 2 but I really think Rampage needs at least another fight before he challenges the belt. The winners of this would face off for the title shot, and Rampage would have two more UFC fights under him before facing Chuck.

Great looking card I agree. I'd like to see Tito after the fight w/ evans. If he wins hes calling chuck out again, if only to get KTFO again.

I think evans is going to come confident out of the KO of Sean Salmon, but not even in the same ballpark as tito.

I REALLY, REALLY doubt Tito will be calling out Chuck again, not after this, not ever. Tito is a smart enough guy to know when he's outclassed, and simply put, he's outclassed.

Don't worry though, as soon as Pride goes bankrupt their fighters won't have any other choice but to come over to the UFC, so we'll be seeing some awesome fights after this, Tito vs. Shogun, Forrest vs. Wanderlei, Chuck vs. Arona.. It's fucking awesome.
