Anyone know if the firewall for Ubuntu starts automatically when the machine boots or does it only start when Firestarter is launched?

Ubuntu doesn't have a firewall setup by default.

If you installed Firestarter, though, I think it starts at boot.

You can check by opening a terminal and running:
    sudo /etc/init.d/firestarter status
