Any of you guys have success installing this with drives using the onboard raid controllers? Specifically SATA drives, what release of Ubuntu are you using if so?

Been playing around with getting it working and haven't had any luck so far using the Edgy release. Going to screw with the Dapper release tomorrow as a lot of the searches I've done reference using that version specifically.

Seems like Solaris 10 has the same problems identifying the on board raid "array" as well. Haven't pursued much using Solaris 10 though since I already have an old Ultra 60 at home and could just upgrade it to 10 if I really wanted it.

If you're going to use Solaris 10, consider scrapping the RAID controller and use ZFS. Can Sol see the drives as normal SATA drives?

onboard promise controllers have high success rates. Intel RAID controllers are probably widely supported, as well.

what mobo are you using? Knowing the chipset would definitely help us determine what you need to do.

Yeah. The iswraid project (http://iswraid.sourceforge.net/) adds support for Intel's software RAID for the 2.4 kernel, and it is supported by dmraid in 2.6.

Yah i'm in the liveCD installing now with the dapper release and it seems to be working 10x better than the edgy release I was playing with. Couldn't get dmraid working 100% correctly in the other release.

that controller "should" have out-of-box support for that controller.

Ended up using these two guides and got it working.

    http://www.ubuntu-in.org/wiki/SATA_RAID_Howto

    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FakeRaidHowto

Had to do an apt-get install on dmraid to get it going but after that it went pretty smoothly.

Now my next problem is the stupid sound isn't working even though it worked fine when it did the LiveCD "ubuntu try out"
