Two weapons stolen from Montebello police cruiser after apparent joy ride
    10:54 AM | March 8, 2009

Montebello police spent more than an hour today trying to find a police cruiser after someone apparently took it for a joy ride and stole two weapons inside before ditching the vehicle.

Lt. Brad Keller said the cruiser was stolen shortly after 3 a.m., when officers were dispatched to a party in the 600 block of Forbes Avenue. Keller said he was unsure how the cruiser was stolen but said the incident was "under investigation."

West Covina police found the vehicle about an hour later on North Ballista Avenue in La Puente. Keller said two weapons inside the vehicle -- an AR-15 assault rifle and an 870 Remington shotgun -- were missing.

High confidence this is what happened.

Wondering how (if) they had the long guns secured.

Isn't it the policy of most agencies to leave the cars running? I have some friends that are cops and any time I've gone on a ride-along they will keep the car running the entire time on shift. Extra set of keys to lock and unlock the doors when out of the vehicle.

Leaving it running is SOP, leaving it unlocked is clownshoes.

I carry a spare cuff key/car key in the trauma plate carrier of my vest

i always thought leaving the car running was policy. and i figured they just left it unlocked for easy access. besides, who would be stupid enough to steal a police car?

Whoever they are, the police are still too stupid to stop them from doing it, and too stupid to catch them.

Only the police are responsible enough to own these types of weapons.

We need to close the police cruiser loophole.

We lock and turn our cars off all the time :dunno:

Weapons are also secured via electronic lock, and unless you pushed all the buttons, you probably wouldn't be able to pop it. The button for it isn't labeled "GUN LOCK" or anything stupid like that :mamoru:
