I am in need of a TV for my dorm room this fall since I sold my old tv. Well after reading several threads in the main forum I stumbled across the elgato products. Pretty much what I need for this fall is a way to watch tv. The room does not have a cable box, just a wall outlet where we can attach a coax cable to plug into a tv. I am selling my xbox so all I need the tv for is to watch tv. Would a product such as those from elgato solve my problem and allow me to watch tv on my MBP? If I buy a second monitor can I watch tv on the second monitor and still use my MBP for regular use? Any info or help would be great! Thanks!

    EDIT

so assuming I get the elgato and an extra monitor...

    1) when not watching tv will the extra monitor act as a duplicate picture of my MBP screen or will I be able to move my mouse from my MBP screen to the other and have different things open on each screen

    2) will I be able to watch tv on the extra monitor and still use my mbp as normal

    3) what monitor should i get? id like to keep it less than $300 if I can (used is fine)

    4) how can I change channels using the elgato for tv? can I use a remote? will I be able to use a sleep timer?

You are looking to do exactly what I did my 2nd year of college.

I had a Macbook Pro with a 30" cinema display attached to it and an elgato eyetv hybrid.

you can watch TV in a window if you are using the cinema display as your monitor, or you can make it full screen on either monitor or both.

it was ftw. and dell 30" are pretty cheap and awesome! i wouldn't recommend an apple cinema display right now as they are likely to be revised soon.

I think it would be 3x cheeper and easier to just get a real tv.

    get the elgato.

my tv basically just serves as an external monitor now because I either download hd versions of tv shows I want to see or watch the news. :o

is it pretty easy to set up and use?
where is the best place to get one? (best = cheapest but reliable)

    1) Yes to all scenarios.
    2) Yes
    3) Buy the one you saw in the YS, doesnt get much better
4)All that is handled by propetary software, im sure you can use a remote somehow with the mbps infrared sensor, and for the timer i have no clue but you can use something that puts your actual mac on a timer.
