Well, I'm in the middle of my pistol permit. Here's some of the stuff I have to do in New York State.

    1. 4 Notarized Letters of Reference
    2. 2 Full length forms
    3. Arrest Affidavit
    4. 3 sets of fingerprints, 1 for the FBI
    5. Interview with County Sheriff
    6. $90 Money Order

..and more stuff. And then, I can't take it to uptown Albany, NYC or uptown Buffalo.

...and I've chosen my first gun. And some of you will be like :ugh:, but anyone who's ever shot a gun before will understand.

My first pistol will be a Carbon Fiber Walther P22 (.22LR pistol)

Firstly, although I'm applying for "Carry Concealed" they won't approve it. Period. In my county of residence, Westchester and Orange, they have no carry concealed. So I'm not buying this for self-defense. At home, I have my Dad's guns, and his shotgun. So, that's not really an issue.

Secondly, when I was shooting my dad's, 9mm's, .40's and .45's, my inexperience is showing. Although I've been to the range dozens of times with them, I'm having trouble getting reliable tight circles at a distance. When I shoot, I naturally compensate for the recoil and blink. I decided to buy a good .22LR pistol, get blocks of ammo and shoot it until I can watch the whole slide work back and the brass fly out the side without blinking.

When I can get that down, I'll be ready to drop the $$ on a 'big boy' gun. A 9mm, I think. So, thoughts, props, flames? What do you all think?

I would have avoided the carbon fibre, not too visually appealing to me. As far as going for a 22 though, i think you've got enough reasoning to justify it. You want mroe experience before upgrading, 22 ammo is cheap and widely available, etc.

anyone with normal visiion can tell its a pattern and not real cf

you compensate for recoil naturally? hardly. its something you do on purpose. you arent born knowing how to do it, its learned and unlearned

    Only handgun I own is a .22

I don't care much for pistols, I'm more of a rifle guy, but I do like my .22 pistol, lots of fun and it always comes with me. I assume I'll pick up another pistol in a bigger caliber soon though, I'm not 21 yet so my options are limited to what I can find FTF for a little while longer. :hs:

I had the chance to shoot the p22 at the range this past weeked. It was a lot of fun and more accurate than I thought it was going to be. Not sure why I thought it would be inaccurate.

guy at the gun shop said you never know, and he might just say "well, you can't carry concealed for personal protection, but you can carry it to hunting and camping."

it's like haggling, you make a big request knowing it's going to be dropped down, then you find something you can agree on.

    NY sucks. :mamoru:

first off, i don't like the glock. the trigger pull is too long for me, i think it's something like 12 pounds of force, but don't quote me on that. i felt better with a lighter trigger on the sig's and hk's. and i always have my dad's kimber's and sig's to "play" with before deciding what one I like.

i love the CF look. I think its pretty. :greddy:

and qft on the 2nd part after feeling the recoil, i dip the gun to compensate, causing my shots to go low. one time, i pulled the trigger and the bullet didn't go off, and i saw myself blink and push the gun away from me and down about an inch. i need to unlearn that and keep my eyes open and resist reacting to the bang and flash by blinking... you won't hit anything with your eyes closed. :)

Stock Glock is 5.5lbs. There are NY and NY2 triggers that are like 8lbs and 12lbs.

Good choice, sound reasoning in your purchase and practice plans.

yeah, the glocks i tried out on the range (in ny, obviously) were real stiff, 12 lbs is the number which i believe i was quoted..

my dad has a p229 and he loves it. it's his carry pistol when he does part time armed security.

and yeah, new york state glocks are absolutely rediculous.

Fwiw you aren't obligated to have such a spring in new york or anything like that. They're for the nypd and came to be called ny trigger springs. If you buy a new in the box glock it will come with a standard trigger spring regardless of where you live.
