Recipe for Excess: Chevy’s 395-hp pickup would run with the best

When ladling information our way on the Chevrolet Silverado regular-cab SS, GM officials wanted to make it painfully clear that they wouldn’t be building GM’s most legitimate high-performance truck anytime soon. But you can: Visit any GM parts catalog or salvage yard, grab the goods, take them to the garage and settle in for a major project.

This is a stripped-down, rear-wheel-drive benchseater fitted with a modified 6.0-liter V8. One of Chevy’s two six-speed manuals—the Corvette’s T56—serves as transmission. In short, this is just what The General should build for no-nonsense, lumber-hauling performance junkies.

The six-speed is operated via a chrome shift lever capped by a Hurst cue-ball handle. Tight and textured black rubber flooring, mammoth 20-inch Goodyears, white-faced gauges, SS badging and a pair of boxed-in 2.5-inch tips with accompanying growl present an image somewhere between minimalist and glutton. (GM offers a 345-hp dual-cab SS Silverado that, at 5000 pounds-plus, errs on the side of gluttony.)

Packaging aside, what sets the 4190-pound concept apart is the 395-hp, 409-lb-ft worth of balls-out acceleration found in full force just north of 4000 rpm and continuing all the way to a redline in the low 6000s. The smooth Centerforce clutch and silky manual shifter allow you to run up and down the gears with an ease somewhat characteristic of a Corvette. We ripped the SS around an interstate/surface street lap in metro Detroit and were delighted with flawless clutch engagement and reams of high-end power.

This isn’t an out-of-the-box V8. The iron small-block is fitted with Corvette LS6 aluminum cylinder heads. Combustion-chamber volume is decreased by 10 percent and compression ratio raised to 10.5:1. The engine employs a high-lift roller camshaft and custom oil pan with elongated sump and a Corvette LS1 oil deflector.

If GM did make this vehicle, it would be priced under $30,000, according to Gary Mulder, manager of Chevrolet specialty vehicles and show cars
. There is no telling how much money and time it would cost to do it yourself. A base, sub-$20k rwd regular-cab Silverado cannot be had with a 6.0-liter V8, so your investment would start in the engine bay, and then you’d have to modify the transmission a bit to fit the truck. You would also have to make the custom rocker extensions and back corner cladding yourself, as it is not available from GM. The fascia treatment can be ordered.

In addition to powertrain modifications and Corvette transmission, this tuner gets a five-link rear suspension from a Chevy Tahoe sport/ute welded in place of the standard rear leaf, which improves handling a bit. Aftermarket springs lower the truck 1.5 inches in the front and 2.5 inches in the rear. Bilstein dampers and a Hotchkiss Performance stabilizer bar complete the handling package. The steering has been tightened a bit, but it still behaves like a truck, especially through tight turns, and it is quite jittery over highway flaws. Braking is a bit more hesitant than we would prefer in a performer.

If you are looking for weight, room and four-wheeling stability in an SS package, Chevy’s production all-wheel-drive SS four-door is available for $40k. We’ve driven the built-for-profit version and we’ll hold out for this rip-roaring, cheaper, more powerful concept.

    CHEVROLET SILVERADO SS CONCEPT
    POWERTRAIN: 6.0-liter, 395-hp, 409-lb-ft V8; rwd, six-speed manual
    CURB WEIGHT: 4190 pounds
    0-60 MPH: 6.0 seconds

I saw the truck in this article last Saturday, and snapped a few pics.

Chevrolet should be building this instead of the AWD behemoth SS their foisting right now.

A friend of mine and his father built a muscle truck like this in high school.

It was a 1974 Chevrolet regular cab short box, all restored at home. Repainted hugger orange, and looked stock outside except for the tinted glass, lowered ride height, and aftermarket wheels.

It had a new interior with a bench seat, manual everything, no A/C, four speed on the floor, and a rebuilt 1973 Buick 455 V8 under the hood.

It was a real mover, I think his dad still has it.

Even if they were to build it now (which they won't because they live to irritate enthusiasts), it'd still be to little, to late.

I have to think that things are looking up at the general though. A year ago, who would have believed that they would actually build the CTS-V. And with the rumors flying of a 500 hp Z06, it looks like the bean counters might be starting to give the designers their balls back.

very true... the CTS-V DID shock the shit outta me, lol... But according to my transportation design instructor, back in 2001, was when they began a shift back to being "ballsy"... he said it'd take a while, but what's causing it, is more younger people goin up the ladder... you know how youngsters are... always startin shit :bigthumb:

but we'll see what the future holds... I'm really interested to see what GM's trucks have in store for the future :naughty:
