I had my second child 6 months ago. Lately when I run I will get a stitch like feeling probably 4-5inches from my belly button on each side.

Is this just because I haven't been working my tummy muscles much (only just started sit ups and crunches) or could it be that I have badly damaged them?

The sit ups are purely to strengthen my tummy. It isn't as easy to go from lying to sitting as it was pre baby so it is something I want to get in order. As for losing fat, gotta start doing some cardio for that and that requires real effort :(

I know what a stitch is, this isn't it. I thought it described the pain better than 'It feels like my muscles are ripping' because that is over kill.

Perhaps you strained/tore/tweaked something and have a little scar tissue build up.

diastasis recti (sp)- can happen if you try to work the abs too soon after having a baby.
