ok, so I started working out again this summer. I ballooned to 215lbs over this past school semester cause of shitty eating habits/stress, etc...so i thought that it was time I tried working out over the summer to lean down.

So I started mid-April, and since then ive lost about 12lbs by trying to eat healthy and working out 6 mornings a week.

Im proud of my accomplishment so far, but here's the thing: ive got pretty broad shoulders and I hate em, but my gf loves em :naughty:. I want to lean down to around 170-175 by September, but looking in the mirror this morning, it looks like ive gotten wider :ugh:.

Maybe its just me, I dunno, but my face, neck, shoulders, everything looks wider to me.

I havent been lifting heavy weights or anything, just light weights with high repetitions.

I hope im just seeing things, but has anyone experienced getting "wider" when trying to slim down? god this sucks, lol...oh and sorry for the long post :hsd:

Also, since I have asthma ive been taking inhaler medication (Salbutamol) before my workouts in the morning. If I dont I end up losing my breath midway through my workout.

Ive heard that Salbutamol is a type of steroid, can anyone verify this? Could this possibly be why I could be getting wider?

sounds stupid, I know, but I just have to ask to make sure

well maybe since you're losing fat, your muscle is showing through better so you look bigger/wider/more in shape, even though overall you're shrinking :dunno:

ive got broad shoulders as it is, and for being 5'9, to me it looks funny. Ive always been self-conscience about the way I look.

Also If you are a beginer, its quite possible for you to put on muscle mass and lose fat at the same time. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Leaning down makes you look bigger once your muscles start to show more. Stop using the mirror and start using a tape-measure if you're that concerned.

He's only 5' 9" so its really all relative I think. People with smaller joints and low body fat and can be rather big at lower weights. I know a few dudes around the height of 5' 7" - 5' 9" that look like they weight about 20lbs more than they are. Small joints and low bodyfat will do that for you.

Most people would be surprised how much weight they can lose and still retain muscle. I usually walk around at a maintenance of 220lbs @ 5' 9". Last summer I cut down to 195lbs and still was not shredded, but at ~ 20lbs lighter I still looked the same size muscle wise.... If not slightly bigger since more definition was showing.

Guy at my gym I talk to that competes naturally (21 y/o) is pretty damn big @ 7-8%. I ALWAYS assumed he was pushing 210-220lbs based on his size. Come to find out, he maintains at 185 and competes at 170. I would have never guessed.

im the same way, 5'9'', broad shoulders and I always look like a fatty because im stocky, so I figure, if im always going to look big anyway, it might as well be muscle.

broad shoulders are nothing to be ashamed of; don't let the current metro/emo/girlie men phase of our culture dictate your thinking
