I'm looking for a laptop for travel with these criteria in mind:

    -lightweight
    -long battery life
    -built in webcam

Cost is not too important; I want to explore all the options.

    Any suggestions?

Do you actually need the webcam?

Dell XPS M1330. If I was looking for a new machine, I'd definitely consider this.

I have the XPS M1210 and love it, so I have no need for an upgrade.

Of your three requirements, the built in webcam is the one that cuts your options way down. If you can stand an external cam, your world of choices opens up hugely.

Or use the same amount of money to get a computer with 100x more space, 10x more power and 2x the screen size...:ugh:

While the eee/pc is a neat concept, its way over priced. I would like to have something like that to tote around when fixing computers at work, and to use for internet and email.

Is this brand new out? I seem to recall something similar to that that was supposed to be around $200 for like a 8" screen, and something like $300 for a 10" screen.

    Anyone remember that?

    Thanks for the suggestions.

I really like macbooks, but they are too heavy.

I need a webcam, whether built-in or not. I'd rather not have to carry an extra accessory.

Mainly web surfing and small apps. Most intense thing I will be doing is uploading/sorting photos.

I was thinking of the Eee, as I already have an 80GB external HD I could use with it, but decided it's a little too small of a screen for me. I need something I can view photos on, more like 10-13".

I like the X61, not sure what the difference between that and the X60 is. I read some bad consumer reviews of it, though. Are they reliable?

I would keep an eye out for the $449 laptop deals at Wal-mart or other retailers. Grab yourself a small cam, and be done with it. If your going to cart around a laptop, you will need a bag, and the small camera in the bag wont even be noticeable.

Dell outlet center may have some good deals if you search.

And about $800 more than he needs to spend for what he wants. I don't think the 'I have an Apple, so I'm cool' factor is worth $800. I'm not bashing a MAC, but its way more than what he needs, and I would think he came here seeking the best advice possible.

I would not recommend such a small laptop if you plan on using the keyboard at all. When I started my job I got my manager's old laptop, its an IBM with a small screen, little more than 7". He gave it up because the keyboard is so damn small and the screen is pretty much useless when using things like Excel. I am fine with it since I very rarely remove it from the docking station (it's hooked up to a 22" monitor/keyboard/mouse/network). I would not want to use such a small laptop, if it's not plugged into an external monitor/keyboard, as anything but an emergency backup.

X61 is a tablet laptop, X60 is a standard laptop. Thinkpads are among the most reliable notebooks available.

I'm severly disappointed in Lenovo lately. Our offices bought 4 new thinkpads with vista x64 business and they were loaded with trial software crap.:squint:

Dell Vostro 1400 is fantastic, and you can get it with everything you asked, 2 gigs of ram and a C2d for 700 bucks on Dell's small business website.

They advertise 7 hours of battery life with the extended battery, but I get a solid 4 hours out of it.

    2mp webcam, 14.1 inch widescreen.

This is totally the opposite of what the OP is requesting.
But I have a HP Pavillion DV9000 notebook.
It has a screen that is almost 20 inches and a battery that almost lasts 2 hours!

Okay, the battery is problematic. 2 hours really isn't acceptable.
However, I find that most of the time I am using it I am near a power outlet anyways. I have the AC adapter and power cord in my bag and in the year I have had it I haven't run into too many occasions where the battery failed me.

My favorite feature is that it doubles as a portable DVD player.
I know people that have bought those small ass DVD players in Wal-Mart. The screen on my PC puts those things to shame.

Forgot to mention, I'm in SE Asia and won't be back in the US for a while :o

I like Macs and would consider one, but MB Pro is too much power/size, and MB is too heavy.

I heard that Apple is releasing a lightweight notebook soon, though, so that might be an option.

Weight: Starting weight at 5.39 lbs (2.45 kg)
