I want to get into it, but i'm not really sure how and what I need.

    Is a regular $199 Remington 870 fine for trap/skeet?

it's alright if you're just shootin for fun. i prefer semi-auto like my tournament skeet 1100 though. 2 of my buddies shoot 870's and one has a benelli nova.

Went out and shot a bunch of clay once with my grandfather's bolt-action shotgun.

I later looked the gun up online to find it's value and found out there were problems with the bolt shooting off and hitting the shooter in the face :ugh:

i shoot as much as i can, which isnt much, since its about 1hr to the skeet/ trap range. I love it though, and shoot my 870 as much as i can.

Do you guys feel its necessary to get a semi? I'm trying to decide between an 870 and an 1100.

I have no need for a shotgun other than trap & skeet, so I don't really want to get a pump if I'm just going to start hankerin after a semi soon after.

I do trap with a benelli nova pump and Winchester semi. Both work fine but the semiauto cushions at lot more so it's easier to do more games. That's pretty much the only advantage I see. If you're doing doubles then yes a semi is way better for me at least.

Not for me. In Canada, an 870 Ex is $525. An 1100 is $1150.

It's twice the price, but if I'm going to move up to an 1100 soon, there's no reason to spend $525 on an 870.

but some people are dumb enough to pay retail, and small number of even more stupid people would pay over retail.

I have a 870 had have shot about 15 rounds (25 clays) of trap with it. You dont NEED a 1100, and at many trap clubs you are only allowed to have one shell in the gun at any time so a semi auto is pointless. But when you get into skeet and doubles trap a double barrell or semi would be better
