I'm thinking of starting to train MMA to lose weight and learn how to fight. Anyone start out around 27 years old on OT? I never took wrestling or anything else in high school so I dont have a base in anything. I want to get down to 185 and I love MMA and wonder if its a good idea. About 10 minutes away from my house is Brandon Vera's Training Center that I could check out, how much does it usually run to train on a daily basis at a gym like that? I'm at 285 right now and i'm 6 feet tall. Any input is great and well welcomed! :wavey:

Think around 100 bucks a month or more or maybe less and some places have a few options.. MMA, Grappling and Striking.

You can do the MMA which is a mix of everything obviously, Grappling which would focus on the obvious and Striking.

It's up to you which one you want to pick, if you have that school just a rocks throw away then go for it. Sure there's a week trial or something where you could come try it out for a bit and see which class you would like to signup for.

Just go though, that's what you really need to do.. just pick a day and go and do it and figure it out on your own.

I can almost promise that Vera's gym will be more than $100 a month, but having a gym close is awesome. you wont have an excuse not to go.
Vera's gym is a world class gym, you have guys like Rob Kaman teaching classes there, they have a whole TRX set up that looks REALLY fun. For a big dude like you it will probably help a lot.

good luck, and if you dont like it find somethign else.

I would recommend training a specific martial art for a substantial amount of time before entering MMA training.

Says the guy who's usertext suggests he's trained a specific martial art for a substantial amount of time before entering a MMA specific gym.

Most gyms are going to include grappling and kickboxing. If its really just to lose weight and gain a little confidence you shouldnt really go wrong with most gyms.

If you want to fight and compete then a gym where you can start as a rookie but still grow even when you start to get more advanced.

Hillary said the same thing about her gym.

Something about 3 fat brothers showing up and each of them losing at least 40lbs over several months.

But you are not going to lose any weight if you do not train hard, i would suggest complimenting any training you do with a 3km run a day.

    My current schedule is

    Monday - Workout Run
    Tuesday - Training Run
    Wednesday - Workout Run
    Thursday - Training Run
    Friday - Workout Run
    Saturday - Training
    Sunday - Rest

If you want to lose weight via cardio I would suggest Boxing/Kickboxing and or Judo, they are the most cardio demanding sports I can imagine. In bjj you can cheat by having a break if you are in a good position, something that will get you beat up or thrown in the other sports.

Seriously you have way to much of a hard on for Judo dude. BJJ is a very intensive training sport and if it wasn't it's because you went to a shitty gym. Hell even when I was doing it and our instructor was only a purple belt on the time and I was usually on the ground in exaustion by the end of the session. I do however agree with the running, it's great for cardio.
