They're in F1, NASCAR Craftsman Trucks Series, IRL, NHRA Drag racing, Grand AM Rolex series, Toyota Atlantic, and off-road racing, yet they don't make a viable sportscar? I know this question has come up multiple times, but I just had this discussion with a buddy here at work, and we can't imagine why they bother to dump all this money into racing if they don't make a sports car. I mean, who want's to watch a race and say "Man, Toyota really kicked ass in that race, I wanna go buy a Camry now!" :wtf:

Oh don't get me wrong, I know the Camry is a great seller for them, but it's not quite the market demographic that racing fans look for in a brand. I just think that all that R&D that they put into racing could be used to develop a kickass grassroots sports car.

its all about increasing brand recognization/exposure and brand equity.

If consumers see Toyota is successful in motorsports (what is supposed to be the pinnacle of automotive engineering)... then they will often assume they are successful are making great consumer automobiles.

That was not grassroots. Damn thing was a badass car, but how much did it end up costing? $50K or something? They need to put out something to go head to head with the 350z, something with 1 engine option only and priced in the 20K-30K range. I don't see how this is that hard to do.

I recognize that too, but I'm guessing that most racing fans are more inclined to buy a sports car than a family car. The Toyota brand is already a behemoth, I don't really see that they need to increase it much more that it already is.

Remember in the automotive industry, progress is alway's forward and not backward's. Therefore i don't see toyota building a MKv for 20-30k.

its not only racing fans that recognize the exposure.

the average car buyer, of say a Camry, probably doesnt follow F1, Nascar, etc... but if he see all kinds of propaganda from Toyota's involvement in these series on TV, in the dealership... hes gonna think Toyota's doing something right.

Not tough to do, with NASCAR making everyone running damn near the same body. Just slap a Toyota sticker on any of the cars out there and you should be set.

In case you didn't notice, Ferrari is dominating everyone ATM. Toyota has only been racing F1 for 3 years. Ferrari is the oldest team in the paddock.

And before you start trashing 'Jap Trash' Honda has been schooling people in F1 since the 60's.

yeah, I see that point to. Hard to switch gears from my thought process to that of joe user sometimes.

It just pisses me off that they dump SOO much money, especially into F1, and they have no real sports car at all to use all that research and development. :sad2:
