I was looking into getting a total gym or one of the many other brands similar too it. I have tested one out at dicks and I like it but I was curious if anyone owns one or one of the less expencive brands and what their thoughts are on it.

Do whatever you enjoy doing. If you can get a good 30-45 minute workout on the total gym, and you enjoy it, go for it. The gym isn't for everyone.

    Total gym is ok.

A couple years back I was broke and my gym membership expired. I had to workout on the total gym that we had laying around at home for about 3 months. In the end, it is a pretty decent system for someone just starting out or just looking for a decent workout.. However, for the guy that is regularly in the gym, pushing himself to his max 5 days a week the total gym wouldn't do anything.

Back then I was going easy and the total gym was moderately sufficient.. However, now, it wouldn't even come close to cutting it in correlation to my current routine. IMO, for the money it costs, you are better off finding a gym that is only like $20 a month.

well I got one super cheap on ebay so I could do cable motions in my gym-for-home. it works great if you add some weight in addition to your bodyweight when it's set on the highest resistance.

that being said I wouldn't pay what they ask for one.

but please note this is in ADDITION to a full freeweight routine, not replacing it.

Just start walking a lot and eating better if you want to lose weight.

If you want to "stay fit" in the sense that you'll maintain or even gain muscle mass, but aren't looking to bodybuild, there are a variety of better things you could get.

What I have at home is just one system that has a pull up bar, dip handles, backrest and grips for leg raises, and can serve for a variety of other workouts.

It's the same basic thing as this, only I think mine was about half the price and looks way better: http://www.gymcor.com/chdiplegrama.html

With that you can do chin ups for your lats, pull ups for biceps, dips for triceps, rows for uh... whatever back muscles rows work (fuck you guys im not a weight lifter... I'm guessing rhomboids and a little lats/traps?), and you can also incorporate stuff that you don't need a machine for, like pushups and such.

Then if you wanted you could get some adjustable dumbells for the stuff you can't really target with bodyweight workouts like shoulders and traps (i've done upside-down shrugs to target traps using the dip handles, but I'm afraid I'll fall on my head and die, so I just use elastic bands but 50 reps a set is kind of ridiculous and doesn't really do much.. may have to start using weights again.

it probably works fairly well (depending on your goals) but i'll bet you get bored with it pretty quick.
