I'm looking for shotgun, would be primarily used for home defense. I've narrowed my choices down to the 870 or 500, both synthetic 18" of course. Anyone have experience with both? pros/cons of one vs. the other. I've handled both, and they both feel good to me with neither really outweighing the other..:hsd:

I guess it just comes down to how much you want to spend and are you going to be modifying it much? If you want to spend less, get the 500, if you want to modify it, get the 870 since it has more aftermarket support.

I don't know about more support for the 870 I think they both have a ton of aftermarket parts you can get pretty much anything for one or the other.

I'm looking to spend 300-400 without mods. I'd be adding a side saddle and probably a light sooner or later.

    Really like the 590A1..

They both have tons of aftermarket support, but if he ever wants to extend the magazine, he's better off with the 870. Plus, it he wants some sort of pistol grip stock, the 870 would be more suited for it.

A 590 can be had for around $300 if you shop around.

    Edit - I bought my 500 Combo for $200 a while ago.

I wouldnt be adding a pistol grip. I read that the 870s require some grinding to get the mag extension to work properly.

I think it depends on the model. The 870P doesn't have the dimples in the magazine, so you can just slap on an extension.

Go with a 590 and you won't be sorry.

I  my 590 even though I kinda neglect it :o Around here you can usually findem starting around $350. $400 would get you the 500 and pretty much any mod's you wanted to do to it and a few boxes of shells.

I like my 870 but nothing wrong with a Mossy either.

$400 for a Mossy 500? Where are you getting your guns from?

I have a Mossy 500 that came with 2 barrels, 3 chokes, and a pistol grip for ~$270 or so.

A Mossy 500 Persuder (18" barrel, perfect for HD) can be had at almost any sporting goods store for $250 or so.

He said $400 with mods, not just for the gun.

    You're in Springfield, OR, correct?

If so, then go here and look around:

If you like the Mossy's Big 5 has been intermittantly having some crazy deals on 590's. Also you can check GI Joes, I scored my 870P w/ ghost rings there last year.
