if you need the basics of how a camera works and what it does, understanding exposure is a great one.

I have the scott Kelby version
I just finished the Kelby Digital Photography book and didn't really like it. Its somewhere in between a total n00b and amateur and didn't have too much technical info. I felt like the book had a very pompous tone too, like Kelby thought he was being funny most of the time but was really just coming off as a dick.
I have that book and think its great. Lots of tips for exposing in different lit areas.
